If you're on the lookout for authentic Japanese mochi in the heart of San Jose, look no further than Shuei-Do Manju Shop. Tucked away at 217 Jackson St, this gem has become a beloved destination for locals and visitors alike, offering a delightful array of handcrafted Japanese confectioneries that capture the essence of traditional flavors.

At Shuei-Do, the star of the show is undoubtedly their mochi. These delightful rice cakes are not only visually appealing, but they also offer a tantalizing palate experience. Customers rave about the butter mochi, which features a soft, pillowy texture that melts in your mouth without being overly sweet. The kinako and pink and white varieties have also garnered praise for their unique flavor profiles that elevate the classic mochi experience.

As you approach the shop, a small window beckons, hinting at the simplicity and charm of the establishment. The efficiency of the service is noted by many; you can quickly place your order through the window, a feature that facilitates a seamless shopping experience. Customers like A S noted that this quaint spot is their go-to for homemade mochi, especially after the closure of other local favorites. They suggest trying the Monaka and the white bean mochis that offer a delightful blend of textures and flavors.

Feedback from patrons like Sophia Ward speaks volumes about the dedication the staff has towards crafting their sweets. She's traveled from Alaska specifically to indulge in Shuei-Do's offerings and declared it 100% worth the trip! The portions are generous and the sweetness of the butter mochi is just right, proving the shop’s commitment to quality

Every visit can feel like a new adventure, as flavors may sell out quickly, particularly on weekends. Customer Vivian Anne experienced this firsthand when she arrived to find the beloved chichi dango gone, a testament to the shop’s popularity and the need for preorders. Fortunately, its manageable size means you can order a selection to go that is perfect for sharing—or indulging in alone!

Whether you're a seasoned mochi lover or just starting to explore Japanese confectionery, Shuei-Do Manju Shop is a must-visit destination. So grab your friends, reserve your box of treasures, and enjoy a sweet taste of Japan right in San Jose! It's that small yet perfectly curated shop that always leaves you wanting to come back for seconds (as noted by Ashley B.)—and you'll likely find yourself dreaming about those soft, handcrafted delights long after your visit.

We got 10 of the most popular mochis, and I’m not gonna lie, imo I thought they’re like at most 10% better than some other mochis (Nijiya across the street). I loved the butter mochi, the kinako, and the pink white. The other azuki bean filled mochis taste sort of the same (or maybe my palate’s kinda bad). The steamed cake was disappointing for me. For chi chi dango, for some reason the weekly flavour (passionfruit) was so much more flavourful and softer than the regular strawberry one which tasted artificial, so definitely make that choice.

I pre-ordered items from Shuei-Do Manju via email. It was easy and there is a separate window to pick up pre-ordered items so you can avoid the line. I got a box of 8 items and the total was $20. By the time we got there around noon on a Saturday, there was a short line but they were sold out of all of the chichi dango and butter mochi. I am not Japanese so I'm not an expert, but I will try to do my best to describe the items we got! Peanut butter - this was my favorite item from the shop. It's mochi that is filled with peanut butter (and maybe lima bean according to the website) and coated in kinako. The mochi was so tender and chewy and it had just the right amount of peanut butter in it. Mango & strawberry chichi dango - again, the mochi itself had a wonderful texture. The flavors were quite subtle and kind of reminded me of hi-chew candies. White manju - this was like a steamed bun filled with azuki (red bean paste). The bun itself is quite thin (so not like dim sum style buns). I haven't had manju before so I enjoyed trying it. Kinako - another mochi item with great texture. I think it has a filling but I didn't notice much taste wise and it was coated in kinako powder. Brown inaka - this is similar to the white manju except the red beans were whole and it's made with brown sugar. Again, fun to try. Overall, I really enjoyed everything we got but if I were to return, I would get the peanut butter mochi. I also want to try the butter mochi and monaka on my next visit!

Pretty solid mochis. Got a box of 4 (yomogi, green tea, peanut butter, butter mochi) for $10. Can mix and match flavors however you like. Mochis were a nice texture, the ones with red bean paste were really sweet though. I think the best ones are the butter and peanut butter, but overall their not on Japan level. Maybe the best we got here. They take contactless payments and are very efficient. It is just an order window and as soon as you pay they will hand you your order. Street parking but free residential street parking a block or 2 north

The woman at the window was so kind! I ordered a tray of 8, but I regret not getting more!! The mochi (manju) are so soft and pillowy... I got the green tea, pink and white, peanut butter, and the butter mochi. They're all so delicious!!

Shuei-Do has always been one of my go tos for homemade mochi in the Bay Area and even more so now that Benkyodo closed down. Highly recommend the butter mochi, white bean mochis, Monaka, and if you’re curious to try other ones, kinako. They do run out on the weekends and towards the end of the day. While mochi is vegan/ gluten free, they sometimes use non gluten free and dairy ingredients.

Delicious fresh mochi! It's a small place with a walk up window for ordering which was unexpected, but the prices are reasonable and the quality is very good. I prefer traditional mochi (habutai), but the green tea was really good too. My friend wanted the peanut butter and brown inaka, but I think the habutai is definitely better imo.

I traveled all the way from Alaska for this mochi and it was 100% worth my time. Sweetest employees and the butter mochi is perfectly buttery, not overly sweet and has a nice semi-soft flaky topping. The strawberry dango is lightly flavored. The portions are amazing. I spent $30 for a box of 12 pieces.

Run as fast as you can towards this place. We even brought home a 4-pack of butter mochi to Denver today. The texture, the sweetness, the moistness of the dessert. It was an impromptu stop on the way to the airport and I am so happy we went back for seconds!
